Do people with dementia get help managing their money?
Belbase, Anek, Geoffrey T. Sanzenbacher, and Abigail Walters. Do people with dementia get help managing their money?. Issue in Brief, 18-6, March 2018.
The brief's key findings are: (1) Dementia severely erodes people's capacity to manage their finances. (2) But this analysis finds that most with dementia get help -- typically from spouses and children -- with everyday activities such as writing checks and making deposits. (3) Those who receive help are much less likely to experience severe financial hardship, such as a lack of funds for food or rent. (4) While encouraging, more than 10 percent of those with dementia lack help, and this share could grow because aging boomers have fewer children.
